'Music Evolution' team up with 'o-region' in August!

o-region's groundbreaking short film screening event, roughcut, hits the county again this month with the latest work from up-and-coming southwest directors.

On Thursday 14th August roughcut will be taking over the Sandsifter Bar in Gwithian with a selection of the best new short film work made over recent months. The event also marks the start of an exciting collaboration between Music Evolution & o-region.

"This is another really exciting venture for us," explains Oliver Berry, o-region's Associate Director. "After our sell-out screening at the Golowan Festival in June, we wanted to keep the momentum going, and teaming up with the guys at Music Evolution and the Sandsifter will hopefully bring a whole new facet to the event. We'll be showcasing the best new short films and local DJs from across the southwest in one of Cornwall's hottest new venues, so we think this is going to be one of the events of the summer." As well as premiering a crop of new Cornish films, o-region are proud to be screening work from London-based filmmakers Anastasia Kirillova and Carlo Ortu, and Bristol’s acclaimed director Esther May Campbell.

roughcut was established back in 2004 and established a reputation as one of the most exciting film events in the southwest, providing a platform for new directors to show their latest work in front of a live audience. The Sandsifter roughcut is the second of four 'cinematic parties' in 2008, with subsequent events at Miss Peapod's in Penryn to mark Hallowe'en, and a Christmas roughcut at the Acorn in Penzance in December.

Also this month, o-region will be presenting their debut feature film, The Midnight Drives, at a special outdoor screening in Penlee Park on 28th August. Following sell-out screenings at last year's Cornwall Film Festival, and a high-profile tour of European film festivals this summer, this is one of the only opportunities this summer to catch this ambitious Cornish-made film from local writer/director Mark Jenkin, described by renowned film critic Derek Malcolm as "a moving film about parentage with an exceptional performance from Colin Holt at its centre".

Both events are part of o-region's ambitious 2008 screening network, supported by University College Falmouth, South West Screen, O2, Chew TV and Penwith District Council. To find out more and to book your tickets for both events, click here.
